EPUB, CBZ or PDF: which manga format should you choose?

Start with the reader, not the extension

MangaMazing offers EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, CBZ and PDF conversion options. An available export option is not a promise that every device or cloud service accepts it. Decide where you will read and how you will transfer the file first.

EPUB: an input for Send to Kindle and an e-book format for Kobo

Amazon lists EPUB among the accepted Send to Kindle input formats. Amazon processes the upload; this is different from a Kindle reading a raw EPUB copied over USB. Kobo lists EPUB support, with EPUB3 exceptions for the original Kobo and Kobo Wi Fi.

For illustrated books, test the generated layout. Images and fixed page composition do not automatically behave like reflowable novel text.

CBZ: for comic readers and compatible Kobo devices

CBZ packages ordered page images in a ZIP-based comic archive. It is a practical choice for a reader that explicitly supports comic archives. Kobo lists CBZ and CBR for its eReaders, but its mobile apps have a different support list.

CBZ is not listed as an accepted Send to Kindle web input. Renaming a CBZ to EPUB does not convert it. MangaMazing currently converts its completed download jobs; it does not offer general-purpose CBZ file upload.

PDF and Kindle-oriented formats

PDF preserves page layout and is widely supported, but a large page with small lettering can be awkward on a small screen. Check a sample before choosing PDF for an entire series.

Use AZW3 or legacy MOBI only when your device and transfer workflow support them. Neither appears in Amazon’s current Send to Kindle web input list. Do not choose them merely because they sound Kindle-specific.

A practical decision

Use EPUB as the first format to test for Send to Kindle; test EPUB or CBZ on a compatible Kobo; use CBZ in a dedicated comic reader; try PDF when preserving a fixed page is the priority. In every case, verify page order and readability with a short authorized sample before a large batch.
